Fertility Acupuncture Q & A

What is fertility acupuncture?

Fertility acupuncture is a Chinese medicine technique that’s been practiced for thousands of years. It’s similar to traditional acupuncture, but instead of treating health concerns, such as pain or anxiety, it aims to support fertility and make it easier to conceive.

Because about one in five U.S. women struggle to get pregnant, many are using fertility acupuncture alongside assisted reproductive technology, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Research is still in its infancy, but several studies have found that this technique may improve ovarian function plus sperm quality in men.

Who should consider fertility acupuncture?

The Seven Dragons Integrative Medicine team encourages you to consider fertility acupuncture if you and your partner have been trying to conceive for more than six months without success.

You may also be a good candidate if you’re:

  • Experiencing high levels of fertility-related stress or anxiety
  • Preparing for IVF or IUI
  • Experiencing menstrual cycle irregularities
  • Struggling with fertility treatment side effects, such as bloating or nausea
  • Living with a diagnosis, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, or unexplained infertility

Although fertility acupuncture is often associated with women, it may also benefit men. For example, you could benefit if you’ve been diagnosed with poor sperm quality or low sperm motility.

What does fertility acupuncture involve?

Fertility acupuncture typically takes 60-90 minutes.

Before recommending this approach, your provider reviews your health history, asks about your fertility goals, and completes an exam, and may recommend lab testing if necessary.

Next, you’re asked to lie down on your back on a comfortable reclining table. Your provider then inserts a series of very thin needles into strategic areas of your skin, called meridians, that stimulate your nervous system. The location of needle placement varies from person to person, but common areas of focus include the lower abdomen to help stimulate the reproductive organs and the legs and feet.

Once the needles are placed, you relax for 15 to 30 minutes. Afterward, your provider removes the needles, and you go home. There’s no downtime or recovery period, and most people return to work and other activities the same day.

How many fertility acupuncture sessions are needed?

The Seven Dragons Integrative Medicine team typically recommends a series of 8-12 weekly acupuncture sessions for people preparing to undergo IVF or other similar treatments. Consistency gives acupuncture the best chance to influence fertility factors, such as uterine blood flow, hormone balance, and egg quality.
